2012 events

Events in 2012 included:

  • In April an author reading was held by Berlin-based German novelist Inka Parei. She read parts from her recent books in German and English and shared a drink with Goethe Society members afterwards.
  • In May, five Auckland secondary schools participated in the annual Goethe Society German Quiz. This  event is highly competitive and a lot of fun. Be prepared for the upcoming quiz in 2013.
  • Also in May, three New Zealand students illustrated their personal impressions of Germany, after returning from courses and scholarships they attended in Leipzig, Essen and Freiburg.
  • August offered a number of cultural highlights for members of the Goethe Society. Starting with a fascinating seminar on German Samoa, continuing with a reading by poet Michael Hofmann, followed by  a theatrical reading from Schnitzler’s play Reigen, and finishing with six student performances of the memorable production 'Currywurst mit Pommes: Satirische Momentaufnahmen am Rand einer deutschen Autobahn', by Frank Pinkus and Nick Walsh.
  • An inaugural lecture was held in September on ‘“The Magic Lake”: Fontane’s last novel The Stechlin (1899) and its message for the twentieth century and beyond’.
  • Also in September, the German poet Jan Wagner gave a lively seminar, in which he read selections of his poetry, in both the original German and the English translation.
  • In October, top students received their prizes for the annual Goethe Society secondary school examinations.
  • In November, the 200th anniversary of the appearance of Grimms’ classic collection of tales, was celebrated with a lecture on ‘The Missing Fairies of Grimms’ Fairytales’.
