Germany and the Refugee Crisis – Volunteering at a Reception Camp

  • UoA Epsom Campus, B Block, 104 74 Epsom Avenue Auckland, Auckland, 1023 New Zealand (map)

What is it like to be in the middle of the refugee crisis? UoA German's current language intern Malin knows because she's been there. Take this chance to hear from someone who was in the thick of it for months, and learn how the refugee crisis feels like from inside.

Malin Messmer was born and raised in Germany to a German father and an Iranian mother. She spent the first half of 2016 in Germany, volunteering for the Red Cross at a reception camp for refugees. As such, she was part of a team that offered a play group for children that otherwise had no structure in their day-to-day lives.

Working with children and sometimes parents that were driven from their homes and had to fight their way through to Europe, Malin experienced the recent Refugee Crisis from a very different point of view than most of us in NZ could.

Come join us and learn more about Germany and how the other side of the world deals with this humanitarian tragedy.

The talk will be in English and take place immediately after the AGM.

Yes, there will be drinks and nibbles in-between. :)
